Essay 1: The Importance Of Music

Man derives intense happiness from music. Think of a world without music. How strange and how dull such a world would be! No wonder milions of people all over the world listen daily to popular music played on radios, television, record-players and juke-boxes.

Man's fascination for music is so great, taht different forms of music are composed to reflect the varying moods and emotions of man. We have, for instance, the modern pop songs to reflect man's light hearted, gay mood. For the sombre type of man there is classical music. There is music for fun, music for humour, music for leisure and enjoyment, music for mourning. In short what mood of man, which facet of man's life is not reflected through the medium of music?

In modern times we live in a world of music. This shows the great impact of music on man's life. As a background to work, to leisure, and to conversation music is being increasingly used. With the development of portable transistor radios we can get music anywhere at anytime.

In some people music acts as a stimulus to their creative powers. Have we not heard of the repeated attempts made by youngers interested in music to make music of their own on the recorder, harmonica, or guitar or any one of the other musical instruments.

Sometimes music plays a secondary role when it is only in the background. Background music is a very valuable asset in dance, drama and picture. This is because music can reflect man's moods and emotions, and more so it could stimulate such moods and emotions. One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of dance, drama and pictures is the vital role music plays in such forms of art. In drama, plays and films, it plays a significant part in helping to set or change the mood of the plays, to stir the emotions of the audience, and to slacken or heighten tenseness. Because on the screen, in television and radio for the purposes of commercial advertisement.

Music is a form of art. One of the main functions of art is to provide ideas. Ideas beget action, and thus ensure continuity of progress in human affairs. Music should not be excluded fron this important aspect of creating ideas in the minds of hearers. In good songs music and words should blend together harmoniously, thus making it both meaningful and enjoyable.
