Essay 1: The Importance Of Music

Man derives intense happiness from music. Think of a world without music. How strange and how dull such a world would be! No wonder milions of people all over the world listen daily to popular music played on radios, television, record-players and juke-boxes.

Man's fascination for music is so great, taht different forms of music are composed to reflect the varying moods and emotions of man. We have, for instance, the modern pop songs to reflect man's light hearted, gay mood. For the sombre type of man there is classical music. There is music for fun, music for humour, music for leisure and enjoyment, music for mourning. In short what mood of man, which facet of man's life is not reflected through the medium of music?

In modern times we live in a world of music. This shows the great impact of music on man's life. As a background to work, to leisure, and to conversation music is being increasingly used. With the development of portable transistor radios we can get music anywhere at anytime.

In some people music acts as a stimulus to their creative powers. Have we not heard of the repeated attempts made by youngers interested in music to make music of their own on the recorder, harmonica, or guitar or any one of the other musical instruments.

Sometimes music plays a secondary role when it is only in the background. Background music is a very valuable asset in dance, drama and picture. This is because music can reflect man's moods and emotions, and more so it could stimulate such moods and emotions. One of the reasons for the increasing popularity of dance, drama and pictures is the vital role music plays in such forms of art. In drama, plays and films, it plays a significant part in helping to set or change the mood of the plays, to stir the emotions of the audience, and to slacken or heighten tenseness. Because on the screen, in television and radio for the purposes of commercial advertisement.

Music is a form of art. One of the main functions of art is to provide ideas. Ideas beget action, and thus ensure continuity of progress in human affairs. Music should not be excluded fron this important aspect of creating ideas in the minds of hearers. In good songs music and words should blend together harmoniously, thus making it both meaningful and enjoyable.

Essay 2: Selfishness

One of the basest of all human qualities is selfishness. It is true that there is a natural tendency for everyone to be selfish. But if we become excessively selfish, then we become anti-social. Harmony and happiness in human society depend on the degree of restraint we place on this quality os selfishness. When we become extremely selfish, we care only for our own interests and comforts. We begin to ignore the rights of others. In other words we become very in considerate of our fellow-beings. We try to make our own life happy and comfortable one. To achive this we are prepared to bring hardship and inconvenience to other people. We are engaged in an exclusive and relentless pursuit to attain our own ambitions and desires. It is this type of man who proclaims, "I am my own world."
This tendency can be the cause of unhappiness and discontentment to others. When we begin to act in an extremely selfish way we delibrately tread on the rights of other people. This can create tensions and quarrels in society. History abounds in examples of dictators who because of their selfishness, clung on to personal power and prestige, plunging the world into war and misery.

Excessive selfishness is one reason for degeneration of the human soul. When it is within our power to extend some form of help to others, if we are extremely selfish we withold such assistance. This is one facet of selfishness. The extremely selfish person will not hesitate to depict other people in dark colours in order to present his personal picture in a bright shade by way of contrast. This is the second harmful aspect of selfishness.

Selfishness is the negation of the aims of education. One of the cardinal principles of principles of education is to enable the individual to think in terms of his fellow citizens. The individual must be trained to seek not only his own welfare but also that of his fellow human beings. If at an early age a child does not show an inclination to share his things with others, then unless taht tendency is corrected, such a child may grow up a selfish person. This is a negation of our educational aims. By gradually overcoming selfishness we become civilised individuals.

The pages of history are adorned with named of persons who have achieved greatness and immortality by overcoming selfishness ans sacrificing their time and lives for the service of the community in which they have lived or for the sake of humanity in general. It is by restraining the element of selfishness that the human soul ennobles itself.

We live in an age of democracy which stands for the rights of individuals. In as much as a selfish person tends to disregard the just rights of other people, he act againts the basic concept of democracy. In so far as he does not show any consideration for others, he acts against the spirit of tolerance in democracy. selfishness is thus a negation of the democratic principles of our lives. Selfishness makes a man ruthless and mean.

Essay 3: Rudeness

Rudeness is a bad trait in a character. We should not display rudeness in our everyday life. By being rude we are likely to lose much and gain nothing in terms of friendship, goodwill and even material rewards. It places our character and personality in a very bad light. Very few of us think seriously of the adverse effects of being rude. Sometimes quite deliberately, and at other times unconsciously, we tend to become rude in our everyday life.

On many occasions, by behaving or talking rudely, we create a bad impression in the mind of others. Rudeness takes different forms. One famous writer said that man's worst enemy is his tongue. Think of the innumerable occasions when, through and unguarded remark or unpleasant word, we have soured our relationship with others. With an ill-feeling it has created in others! Rudeness is traced in sarcasm, in coarse and vulgar language that embarrasses other people. We can be rude through our speech.

A rightly-merited reprimand administered in a hectoring tone could be terned rudeness. The tone of our voice could be rude. The same reprimand expressed in a modulated voice might not irritate or offend the hearer. Boisterous behaviour, talking and laughing loudly while in a crowd or group reveals lack of cultured upbringing.

Speaking of behaviour, some people are in the habit of patting others violently on the back or shaking the shaking the hands of others with a display of finger strength. This is another instance of rudeness. It is wrong to assume that as boisterous behaviour is rudeness it is adviseable to be silent. Misplaced silence borders on rudeness too. If you persistently avoid, ignored and refuse to talk to a familiar person, it could be termed rudeness. To receive a friendly letter and not to acknowledge it is another instance of rudeness.

Have we not come across people who monopolise the conversation in groups, or social gatherings? This type of person very seldom gives a chance to others to speak. Unless, they are gifted with wit and humorous repertoire, their talk could be embarrassingly boring. It is rudeness to bore people with your uninteresting conversation. A good conversationalist should be a good listener.

There are some people who, after rendering some form of service or help to needy persons, go on parading this in public. This is not a civilised attitude. Much of the value of the help we rendered to others will be lost if we begin to publicise such acts. An assistance given should be forgotten by the river, though, of course, not by the receiver.

If we could make a list of all forms of rudeness, it would form an impressive array. The simple lesson we forget is that through each and every one of these acts of rudeness, we are generating ill-will and bad impressions all around us besides creating a large number of enemies. We turn out to be contemptible persons abhorred by our enemies and avoided by our friends and relations. To ensure a happy and successful life is imperative that we should not be rude.

Article 1: Junk Food and Fast Food Increasing Teen Obesity

Many of the television commercials seen by teenagers are for junk food products. According to research released this week by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, this may be a major reason obesity rates continue to rise among 12-17 year-olds. The studies examined by researches at the University of Illinois-Chicago and University of Michigan concluded that 26% of TV ads seen by teens were for food products. The vast majority of these products contain high amounts of fat, sugar and sodium. The groups most impacted by junk food ads are low-income and minority teens. With higher percentages of fast food restaurants in urban communities and race specific junk food marketing campaigns, it is obvious why teens in these groups are experiencing skyrocketing obesity rates. To make matters worse, poorer and nonwhite neighborhoods also have fewer fruit and vegetable markets, bakeries, specialty stores, and natural food stores. In the Detroit metropolitan area the poorest . African American neighborhoods are an average of 1.1 miles further from the nearest supermarket than are impoverished white neighborhoods, according to a 2005 study by the Institute of Medicine.Teens also have few healthy choices at school. According to the research, many middle schools and high schools offer more unhealthy foods than nutritious foods. Many people believe schools carry a substantial burden of responsibility -- just behind parents and individuals -- when it comes to addressing childhood obesity. The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) serves twenty-nine million school children every day and costs American taxpayers more than $7 billion a year to provide "nutritionally balanced" meals. Many students, however, fill up on items such as soft drinks, chips, and cookies, which are high in added sugars, fats, calories, and sodium, but low in nutrition. Such "junk foods" sold in vending machines, cafeteria a la carte lines, and school stores are known as "competitive foods" because they compete with federally funded meals. In the article “Soft Drink Pouring Rights,” New York University Professor and renowned author Marion Nestle stated the following:Healthy People 2010 objectives call for meals and snacks served in schools to contribute to overall diets that meet federal dietary guidelines. Sales in schools of foods and drinks high in calories and low in nutrients undermine this health objective, as well as participation in the more nutritious, federally sponsored, school lunch programs.

Competitive foods also undermine nutrition information taught in the classroom. Lucrative contracts between school districts and soft drink companies for exclusive rights to sell one brand are the latest development in the increasing commercialization of school food. These contracts, intended to elicit brand loyalty among young children who have a lifetime of purchases ahead of them, are especially questionable because they place schools in the position of “pushing” soft drink consumption. “Pouring rights” contracts deserve attention from public health professionals concerned about the nutritional quality of children's diets. As of March 2007, federal efforts to establish consistent nationwide nutrition standards for all competitive foods and beverages sold in schools was embodied in the Child Nutrition Promotion and School Lunch Protection Act of 2007. First introduced in both houses in May 2006, the bill was reintroduced in the 110th Congress and has continued to enjoy bipartisan support from numerous co-sponsors.In May 2006, the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Health and Human Services released a report recommending concrete steps that industry can take to change their marketing and other practices to make progress against childhood obesity.Among the agencies recommendations are that food companies:· Intensify their efforts to create new products and reformulate existing products to make them lower in calories, more nutritious, more appealing to children, and more convenient to prepare and eat;· Review and revise their marketing practices with the goal of improving the overall nutritional profile of the foods marketed to children, for example, by adopting minimum nutritional standards for the foods they market to children, or by otherwise shifting emphasis to lower-calorie, more nutritious products;· Review and revise their policies to improve the overall nutritional profile of the products they market and sell in schools.

In focusing on racial and ethnic populations in which childhood obesity is more prevalent, the agencies recommended that:· Food companies make a concerted effort to include, as part of their marketing of more nutritious, lower-calorie foods, promotions that are tailored to these communities; and· Food companies, the media, and entertainment companies tailor their outreach efforts to promote better nutrition and fitness to these populations. In 1983, food marketers spent $100 million on television advertising to kids. Today, they pour roughly 150 times that amount into a variety of mediums that seek to infiltrate every corner of children’s worlds. The average American child today is exposed to an estimated 40,000 television commercials a year — over 100 per day. Since 1980, childhood obesity rates have tripled among adolescents.

My Comment:
The most unhealthy food are junk food and fast food. But, it was the most popular food among teens. They are more interest in that type of food. This is because, junk food and fast food are more tasty than the healthy food. Advertising of the unhealthy food also more attractive than others. This will increase the obesity of teens. Parents should play their role to control their teen from eat the unhealthy food.

Article 2: How To Eat Healthy And Improve Your Nutrition

There are several steps people can take to eat healthy and improve your nutrition. These are simple rules to follow and they are universal, if you make them a part of your diet you can eat healthy and avoid foods that may not truly be good for you. This article will outline the steps you can follow:

Step 1
The first step you can take to eat healthy and improve your nutrition is to read the back of packaging when you buy food. The front of the packaging is intended to grab your attention and make you want to buy the product. The back of the packaging is where the real information about the product is found. You want to have the least amount of ingredients possible when you buy food. The more ingredients that are in your food, the more artificial substances were added to your food. Also, be wary of food products that have lists of ingredients that you can not pronounce. These are usually artificial man made ingredients that have been added to your food and are not what you want to be eating. Choose foods that only have a f foods with lists of ingredients that you can not pronounce.

Step 2
The second step to take is to only eat foods that come from the earth. Fruits and vegetables and beef(beef that comes from cows that were free range, grass fed, and were not given any hormones of any kind) come from the earth. Sugary snacks, potato chips, and donuts do not come from the earth. If you follow the rule of,"If you can't grow it, don't eat it" you can make sure that you are eating healthy food and putting quality nutrition in your body. Whenever possible you want to eat organic fruits and vegetables and meats that come from animals that were not given any hormones as well. It is always better to eat something that is completely natural than something that has been made by man.

Step 3
When you are eating it is very beneficial to eat foods that are crunchy. Crunchy foods take longer to chew and require you to eat slower. The more you chew, the less you can eat, and your body can tell you that it is full quicker(it takes your body 20 minutes to register to you that it is full, which is why many people overeat because they continue to eat while their body is processing the message that their stomach is full). Eating nuts, carrots, and apples are great crunchy snacks to have. Follow these steps and you can eat healthy and improve your nutrition.

My Comment:
To get a healthy body, we should eat healthy food. This is because the healthy food will go into our body and be our energy. If we eat unhealthy food, we will get not enough energy. There several way how we can eat healthy and improve your nutrition. The best food that are required are vegetables and fruits. It is the best food to get a healthy body and enough energy.

Article 3:How To Get Your Teen To Wake Up In The Morning

Getting your teen to wake up in the morning can be a times quite a challenge. Just because their older doesn't mean that they don't need as much sleep as any other child. And all to often their days are filled with so much activity it doesn't leave much time for sleeping. And this is why having some structure in their life can be very important.

Things You'll Need:
a firm attitude
rules
knowledge
planning

Step 1
After school activities: Cutting back on some of the after school activities might be a good idea. So many times
teens find themselves spread so thin, it's just impossible to get everything done and get a good nights sleep at the same time.

Step 2
Starting on homework early is always helpful, at least that way they will have a little time to relax before bedtime.

Step 3
Set a bedtime: This one is likely to cause some problems and many teens will resist. But it's for their own good and you as the parent need to be firm on this.

Step 4
Set the alarm clock on the other side of the room so that they will have to get up to shut it off.

Step 5
Weekends: The weekend can completely blow your schedule. If your teen is staying out to all hours on weekend and then sleeping half the day, you're going to be right back where you started come Monday morning. In this case the old saying that nothing good ever happens after midnight can be very true. A good rule is to not stay up more than two hours later on the weekends.

Step 6
None of these things are designed to make you popular with your teen. But then again you're the parent and it's your job to make sure that they get the best possible start in life. They may not see it that way right now but if you do your job right someday they will!
My Comment:
To get teen to wake up in the morning, parents should take a few steps. They should play their role together. The parents also have to take action in a positive way and give cooperate each other. Parents also cannot force their children on doing something. If the children refuse to do it, give them time to suit themselves in new situations.
